About Gabès
Gabès is a coastal city in southeastern Tunisia, sitting on the Gulf of Gabès where the Sahara meets the Mediterranean about 400 kilometers south of Tunis. The roughly 112,000 residents live in a settlement built around the rare maritime oasis where palm groves grow directly against the sea, with the local economy now dominated by the Gabès phosphate-processing and chemical complex that has been the subject of long-running environmental disputes over its effects on the surrounding marine ecosystem and the oasis itself. The city anchors the regional road network toward Matmata, Djerba, and the Libyan border crossings. Arabic is universal with French still functional in administration and business. The setting gives a hot desert climate moderated by the sea, with mild winters.
