About Dushanbe

Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan, set in the Gissar Valley at the western edge of the Pamir Mountains in Central Asia, and remains one of the least-visited capitals on the continent despite serving as the country's political, academic, and commercial center. The economy depends heavily on remittances from Tajiks working in Russia, aluminum exports from the Talco smelter, and a slowly expanding Chinese investment footprint. Relocators are realistically limited to diplomats, NGO staff, and a handful of mining contractors. Daily life is in Tajik and Russian, the som is non-convertible outside the country, and serious medical cases route to Almaty or Istanbul. Winters are moderately cold, summers hot and dry, and the Pamir Highway begins here.
