About Zliten

Zliten is a coastal city in northwestern Libya, in Misrata District, with about 204,000 residents. It sits on the Mediterranean about 160 kilometers east of Tripoli along the coastal highway, in a date-palm and olive-growing zone that has been farmed continuously since Roman antiquity. The city is best known nationally as the seat of the Asmariya Islamic University and the historic Asmari mosque, one of the most important Sufi religious centers in North Africa, which has made Zliten a target of repeated jihadist attacks during the post-2011 instability. The modern economy mixes agriculture, fishing, and proximity to the Misrata industrial zone, which holds the country's largest steelworks. Arabic is universal. The Mediterranean climate is hot and dry in summer, mild and rainy in winter. Tripoli is reachable by road in about two hours when the highway is secure.
