About Al Bayḑā’

Al Bayḑā’ sits on the Jebel Akhdar plateau in northeastern Libya, in Cyrenaica about 200 kilometers east of Benghazi. Population is about 130,000, and the city is one of the higher-elevation settlements in Libya at roughly 600 meters, giving it noticeably cooler and wetter weather than the coast. Omar Al-Mukhtar University is the main institution, and the area was briefly used as a temporary administrative seat in the 1960s before Tripoli was confirmed as capital. The economy combines agriculture suited to the Mediterranean plateau climate, government administration, and university employment. The eastern Libyan administration based in Tobruk has effective control over the area, separate from the Tripoli-based government. Foreign relocation is essentially impossible — Libya's divided governance, intermittent conflict, and Western travel advisories against all travel make even short visits high-risk.
