About Zawiya

Zawiya is a coastal city in northwestern Libya, roughly 45 kilometers west of Tripoli along the Mediterranean. It is home to one of Libya's principal oil refineries, the Zawiya Refinery operated by the National Oil Corporation, and serves as the export terminal for crude from the western Libyan fields. The city is also a significant agricultural center for the Jefara plain, producing citrus and olives. Since the 2011 civil war and the prolonged political division of the country between rival administrations, Zawiya has been periodically affected by armed clashes among local factions and by smuggling networks operating on the western Mediterranean coast. The climate is Mediterranean with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Travel to and around the city carries significant security considerations. For oil-sector specialists tied to Libyan refining or western field operations, Zawiya is operationally relevant, though logistics remain complicated.
