Why this quality rating

Iran's public system is structured for local families, but it is not an easy public-school choice for relocating expat households.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Even where resident enrollment is possible, Persian-medium instruction and day-to-day local integration make the public route usually impractical for foreign families.

🚫 Homeschooling

Homeschooling not permitted

Iran requires compulsory school attendance and does not permit homeschooling. Education is heavily regulated by the Ministry of Education with a mandatory national curriculum. No exemptions for homeschooling on philosophical or lifestyle grounds.

Healthcare

System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in Iran.

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Rasht

Rasht is the capital of Iran's Gilan province, a city of roughly 595,000 on the Caspian Sea coastal plain about 320 kilometers northwest of Tehran and 25 kilometers inland from the port of Bandar-e Anzali. The economy combines rice cultivation across the lush surrounding plain (Gilan is Iran's main rice-growing region), tea production, fishing, textiles, and tourism for domestic Iranian travelers drawn to the Caspian coast and the surrounding Hyrcanian forests. The climate is humid subtropical, with the highest annual rainfall in Iran, mild winters, and warm humid summers, all atypical for the broader country. Persian is the working language and Gilaki is spoken locally. Relocators should weigh sanctions-related constraints on banking, the de facto requirement to route international flights through Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport, and minimal Western expat infrastructure outside the capital.
