Why this quality rating
Egypt's public-school system is not the route most internationally mobile families choose when they have private or international alternatives.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident access can exist, but Arabic-medium instruction, crowding, and uneven quality make the public route a hard sell for most expat families.
📋 Homeschooling
Legal with MOE supervisionEgypt allows homeschooling under certain conditions with Ministry of Education oversight. Students must be enrolled in a school for official exams. The process is bureaucratic. Many expat families in Cairo use international schools instead. American and British school options are extensive.

About New Cairo
New Cairo is a planned eastern extension of greater Cairo in Egypt, built on the desert plateau east of the historic urban core since the late 1990s. The city was designed as a lower-density residential and commercial alternative to central Cairo's congestion and now hosts the American University in Cairo's main campus, multiple international schools, embassies relocating from Garden City, and dense expatriate housing in compounds like Katameya Heights. Arabic is universal with English in heavy business and academic use. The climate is hot desert, drier and hotter than the Nile valley. Costs in the serviced compounds run well above Egyptian norms but remain modest compared to Gulf capitals. New ring roads and the planned metro extension still leave material commutes into downtown Cairo.
