Why this quality rating
Uganda's public schools can work for local families, but they are not usually the route expat families choose when they have alternatives.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident families may be able to enroll, but classroom conditions and uneven quality make the public route a situational expat choice.
โ Homeschooling
Not specifically regulatedUganda has compulsory education but no specific homeschooling legislation. Some expat families and missionary families homeschool without interference. No formal framework exists.

About Mbarara
Mbarara is the largest city in western Uganda, sitting at roughly 1,400 meters elevation in the rolling Ankole highlands about 290 kilometers southwest of Kampala on the road to the Rwandan border. The city anchors a substantial cattle-ranching region, with the Ankole longhorn cattle that define the area producing dairy that supplies much of the country's milk processing. Mbarara University of Science and Technology and a large regional referral hospital make the city a notable medical and educational hub. English is the official language alongside Runyankole and Swahili. The climate is tropical highland with mild temperatures year-round and two rainy seasons. The road to Kampala is reasonable, putting the capital within four to five hours, while the Rwandan border at Katuna is similarly accessible, supporting cross-border trade with Kigali.
