Why this quality rating
Uganda's public schools can work for local families, but they are not usually the route expat families choose when they have alternatives.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident families may be able to enroll, but classroom conditions and uneven quality make the public route a situational expat choice.
โ Homeschooling
Not specifically regulatedUganda has compulsory education but no specific homeschooling legislation. Some expat families and missionary families homeschool without interference. No formal framework exists.

About Lira
Lira is the largest city in northern Uganda's Lango sub-region, with a population around 120,000, lying roughly 340 kilometers north of Kampala along the road and rail line to Gulu and the South Sudan border. The local economy centers on cotton, sunflower oil, and cassava processing, with Mukwano Industries and several smaller agro-processors anchoring formal employment. The city served as a humanitarian hub during the LRA insurgency and retains a substantial NGO presence working on post-conflict recovery and refugee response from South Sudan. Lango is the dominant local language; English and Swahili are widely used. Climate is tropical with two rainy seasons. Lira Airport handles limited UN and charter flights; Entebbe is roughly six hours by road.
