Why this quality rating
Tanzania's public system serves local families but classroom resources and outcomes vary sharply by region. English becomes more visible in secondary education, yet the public route is not the default choice for expat families in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar.
Why the expat-access rating looks like this
Resident foreign families may be able to enroll, but school quality variation and the practical language mix (Swahili plus English) usually push internationally mobile families toward private or international schools.
โ Homeschooling
Not specifically addressedTanzania does not have specific homeschooling legislation. Education is compulsory but enforcement varies. Expat families commonly homeschool in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

About Tanga
Tanga sits on the Indian Ocean coast of northeastern Tanzania, the country's third-largest city and historically its principal port for sisal exports during the German and British colonial periods. It is a secondary coastal city well below Dar es Salaam in economic weight, with an economy built on the port (handling regional cargo for northern Tanzania and parts of Uganda), agriculture (sisal, citrus, cashew), cement production, and limited tourism connecting to the nearby Usambara Mountains and Pemba Island. Relocators should weigh a hot humid tropical coastal climate, very low cost of living, and a quieter pace than Dar es Salaam against limited international flight connectivity (most routing via Dar or Zanzibar), stretched municipal infrastructure, and modest expatriate presence. Swahili is essential. Best suited to NGO, port, or agriculture-sector professionals on regional postings.
