Why this quality rating

Tanzania's public system serves local families but classroom resources and outcomes vary sharply by region. English becomes more visible in secondary education, yet the public route is not the default choice for expat families in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, or Zanzibar.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident foreign families may be able to enroll, but school quality variation and the practical language mix (Swahili plus English) usually push internationally mobile families toward private or international schools.

❓ Homeschooling

Not specifically addressed

Tanzania does not have specific homeschooling legislation. Education is compulsory but enforcement varies. Expat families commonly homeschool in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

About Dodoma

Dodoma is the official capital of Tanzania, sitting in the center of the country on the central plateau at about 1,100 meters elevation. Despite being designated capital in 1974, the actual transfer of government functions from Dar es Salaam has been gradual, with most embassies, businesses, and diplomatic activity still concentrated on the coast. Population is around 765,000. The climate is semi-arid with a long dry season and concentrated rains. Relocators encounter Swahili and English as working languages, basic infrastructure that is improving with government investment, and limited international amenities. Foreign residents are predominantly government-affiliated, diplomatic, or with the central campus of the University of Dodoma. Suits posting-driven relocations rather than independent moves.
