About Qurghonteppa

Qurghonteppa is the former official name of Bokhtar, the capital of Khatlon Region in southwestern Tajikistan, retained in older records and still used colloquially. The city sits in the Vakhsh River valley about 100 kilometers south of Dushanbe at around 430 meters elevation, and the roughly 112,000 residents live in the country's third-largest urban center and the administrative hub of the Vakhsh cotton-growing region. The local economy combines irrigated cotton, fruit, and dairy across the surrounding plain, plus public-sector employment as the regional capital. The setting gives hot dry summers and mild winters typical of the lower Vakhsh basin. Tajik is universal with Russian still functional in administration. Dushanbe is about 2.5 hours by paved road and provides the only substantive international air gateway in Tajikistan.
