About Khujand

Khujand is the second-largest city in Tajikistan, sited on the Syr Darya River at the western entrance to the Fergana Valley in the north of the country. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia, founded as Alexandria Eschate by Alexander the Great around 329 BCE, and remains culturally and economically distinct from the capital Dushanbe, with closer historic ties to the Fergana Valley and to Uzbekistan. The local economy mixes textiles (cotton-based), food processing, and trade across the Uzbek border at Oybek. Climate is continental with hot dry summers and cold winters, milder than Dushanbe given the lower elevation. For relocators, Tajikistan attracts very few foreign residents outside diplomatic, NGO, and development circles, almost all concentrated in Dushanbe rather than Khujand.
