Why this quality rating

Nepal's public-school system can work for locally integrated families, but classroom quality and resources vary sharply and most expat households looking for predictability still lean private or international.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident enrollment can be possible, but Nepali-medium instruction and uneven school conditions make the public route a difficult match for most relocating families.

❓ Homeschooling

Not specifically addressed
Minimal requirements

Nepal does not have specific homeschooling regulations. Education is compulsory but alternatives are not well-defined. Some expat families homeschool in Kathmandu.

About Birendranagar

Birendranagar is the capital of Karnali Province in western Nepal, sitting in a Himalayan valley about 600 road kilometers west of Kathmandu. The local economy combines agriculture in the surrounding mid-hills with provincial government employment and trade serving the broader Karnali region, one of Nepal's poorest and least developed provinces. The town is served by Surkhet Airport with domestic connections to Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, and by roads that are reliable in the dry season but vulnerable to monsoon landslides. The climate is subtropical mid-hill, with warm summers, cool winters, and a defined monsoon from June through September. For relocators, Birendranagar is primarily a development-sector and government-service hub; Nepali is essential, infrastructure is basic, and most foreign presence is tied to NGOs, UN agencies, or specific development programs rather than private-sector work.
