About Djelfa

Djelfa sits on the high plateau of central Algeria, at roughly 1,150 meters elevation about 300 kilometers south of Algiers on the route between the Mediterranean coast and the Sahara. The city is the principal regional center between the Tell Atlas and the desert and is known nationally as a center of sheep husbandry, with the surrounding Ouled Nail rangelands sustaining one of the country's largest livestock economies. Local industry is limited to food processing, leather, and services for the surrounding pastoral communities. Arabic and Berber are both in daily use, with French still common in administration and business. The semi-arid steppe climate brings cold winters with occasional snowfall and hot dry summers, with significant temperature swings between day and night. Road connections to Algiers take roughly four hours.
