About Batna

Batna is the principal city and capital of Batna Province in northeastern Algeria, in the Aurès Mountains at roughly 1,040 meters elevation. With around 290,000 residents, Batna is an interior administrative and educational hub, anchored by Université Hadj Lakhdar and a regional economy of livestock, cereals, food processing, and textiles, plus tourism tied to the Roman city of Timgad and the surrounding Aurès range. Arabic is the working language with Tamazight (Chaouia) widely spoken and French used in higher education and administration. Road and rail links connect Batna to Constantine in about two hours and to Algiers in roughly six. Climate is cold semi-arid with snowy winters and hot dry summers. Batna suits academics and Algerian-state professionals.
