Why this quality rating

Uzbekistan's public system is improving, especially in Tashkent, but it remains a local-language-first school path rather than an obvious default for internationally mobile families.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident foreign families may be able to enroll, but Uzbek- and Russian-medium instruction make the public route a hard fit unless the family is planning deeper local integration.

📋 Homeschooling

Legal with school supervision
Registration requiredPeriodic assessment

Uzbekistan allows individual learning at home for children with documented reasons (health, distance). Families must coordinate with a local school for assessments. Enforcement is limited for expats. Growing digital nomad presence in Tashkent.

About Tirmiz

Tirmiz is a city in Surxondaryo Region in southern Uzbekistan, set on the Amu Darya River directly across the water from Afghanistan. The city is Uzbekistan's southernmost significant urban center and a historically important Silk Road and Buddhist heritage site, with archaeological remains from the Kushan period still visible in the surrounding area. The local economy is shaped by its border position, with the Friendship Bridge across the Amu Darya carrying significant freight and humanitarian shipments to Afghanistan, and by agriculture in the irrigated cotton fields of the Surxondaryo basin. A new Termez International Airport free economic zone aimed at trans-Afghan trade has expanded the city's role since 2021. The climate is hot desert, with extremely hot summers regularly above 40 degrees Celsius and mild winters. For logistics or humanitarian work tied to Afghanistan from the north, Tirmiz is operationally relevant.
