About Lichinga

Lichinga is the capital of Niassa Province in northwestern Mozambique, situated on the high plateau west of Lake Niassa near the borders of Tanzania and Malawi. It is the country's most isolated provincial capital from Maputo, with an economy oriented around subsistence and commercial agriculture, particularly tobacco and forestry plantations, plus provincial administration. Portuguese is the official language. The climate is subtropical highland, cooler than coastal Mozambique with a single rainy season from November to April. For relocation, Lichinga is a thin market: limited expatriate infrastructure, road access via long unpaved corridors or seasonal flights from Maputo and Pemba, and demand driven almost entirely by NGOs, missions, and agribusiness operations rather than independent residents.
