About Gurúè

Gurúè sits in Zambézia province in northern Mozambique, on the southern slopes of Mount Namuli at an elevation around 700 meters. Its roughly 170,000 residents live in a city whose economy is built almost entirely around tea cultivation, with the surrounding highlands hosting some of the largest tea estates in Africa, mostly operated by post-colonial successor companies. The setting is mountainous and humid, with rainfall and temperatures significantly milder than the coastal lowlands of Mozambique, supporting a year-round growing season. Portuguese is the official language, with Lomwe widely spoken in daily life. The climate is subtropical highland with a clear rainy season from November to March. Road access from the provincial capital Quelimane is long and often difficult during the wet season. For relocators, Gurúè is essentially a tea-industry or NGO posting rather than a general destination.
