About Osh

Osh is the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan, sitting in the Fergana Valley near the Uzbek border with about 322,000 residents. It functions as the principal city of southern Kyrgyzstan, with an economy combining the long-standing Jayma Bazaar (one of Central Asia's oldest and largest markets), cross-border trade with Uzbekistan, regional administration, and Osh State University. Kyrgyz and Uzbek are both in daily use, alongside Russian, reflecting the city's mixed ethnic profile. The climate is hot semi-arid continental with hot dry summers and cool winters. Relocators are largely domestic and regional; foreign presence is modest, including aid, academic, and a small backpacker-tourism cohort drawn by the Pamir Highway. Practical access is via direct flights to Bishkek and the M41 highway into the Pamirs.
