Jalal-Abad is the third-largest city in Kyrgyzstan and the administrative centre of Jalal-Abad Region, set in the eastern Fergana Valley near the Uzbek border about 280 km west of Bishkek. Population sits near 123,000. The economy combines administration, cotton and tobacco agriculture across the valley, light manufacturing, mineral-water production from local springs that gave the city its historic spa reputation, and trade with Uzbekistan. Climate is hot-summer continental, with hot dry summers, cold short winters, and most rainfall in spring. Kyrgyz is the state language and Russian remains widely used in business; Uzbek is spoken by a significant ethnic-Uzbek minority. Osh sits about 100 km southwest by road; access to Bishkek requires a long mountain crossing or a flight.
