About Keelung
Keelung sits on the northern coast of Taiwan, roughly 25 kilometers northeast of Taipei at the head of a deep natural harbor on the Pacific. It is Taiwan's second-largest container port and historically the primary maritime gateway to northern Taiwan, though Taipei Port and Kaohsiung have absorbed much of the container trade in recent decades. The local economy combines shipping, naval base operations, fisheries, and a commuter relationship with Taipei via frequent buses and the Taiwan Railway. The climate is humid subtropical and notoriously rainy, with Keelung holding among Taiwan's highest annual rainfall figures. Mandarin is universal alongside Taiwanese Hokkien. Foreign residents are limited compared to Taipei proper; the city appeals to those seeking lower rents within commuter range of Taipei while accepting the rain.
