About Chiayi
Chiayi is a small lowland city in southwestern Taiwan with around 263,000 residents, sitting on the Chianan Plain at the foot of the Alishan range. It serves as the commercial and administrative anchor for one of Taiwan's main rice and pineapple producing regions, and hosts food processing, light manufacturing and National Chiayi University. High Speed Rail at nearby Taibao places Taipei within 90 minutes, while the conventional TRA line bisects the city. Summers are hot and humid, winters mild and dry. Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien dominate everyday speech, English remains limited, and both rent and cost of living run substantially below Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung.
