About Sohar

Sohar sits on the Gulf of Oman coast in the Al Batinah region of northern Oman, about 230 kilometers northwest of Muscat. Historically a major Indian Ocean trading port credited as Sindbad's hometown in regional folklore, Sohar today anchors one of Oman's principal industrial diversification projects. The Sohar Port and Freezone host petrochemical, steel, aluminum smelting, and logistics operations, making the area one of the country's largest non-oil employment centers. Climate is hot desert with summer highs above 40 Celsius and significant humidity from the coast, plus mild winters around 25 Celsius. Muscat is about three hours by road via a well-maintained expressway. For foreign relocators Sohar offers Oman's relatively stable visa structure for employment-sponsored workers, with the practical understanding that Muscat handles most expatriate-oriented services, healthcare, and international schooling at scale.
