Using curated quality notes for now.

Why this quality rating

Hungary’s public schools can work for local families, but expat fit is weaker and quality feels less consistent than top-tier EU systems.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident enrollment is possible, but Hungarian-medium instruction makes the public route a hard sell for most foreign families.

📋 Homeschooling

Legal with school supervision

Homeschooling (magántanulói jogviszony) is legal. Students must be registered with a school and take exams. The student can study at home but the school provides supervision and assessment.

Healthcare

System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in Hungary.

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Pécs

Pecs sits in the Mecsek Hills of southwestern Hungary, near the Croatian border. It is one of the oldest cities in the country, with a continuous urban history back to Roman Sopianae and a preserved Ottoman-era mosque from the period of Turkish occupation. The economy is built on the University of Pecs, which includes the country's oldest university foundation and a substantial medical school that draws significant international student enrollment, particularly from Germany, Iran, and Norway. The closure of the surrounding coal and uranium mines reshaped the labor market across the 1990s and 2000s. The climate is humid continental moderated toward Mediterranean by the southern location, with warm summers and mild winters. Hungarian is essential outside the university; German and English are common on campus.
