Why this quality rating

Nigeria's public-school system is too uneven to treat as a reliable default for internationally mobile families, even though English helps.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident access can exist, but quality, consistency, and practical fit make the public route usually unattractive for expat families.

โ“ Homeschooling

Varies by state

Nigeria has compulsory education laws but enforcement is inconsistent. Homeschooling exists in a gray area and is practiced by a growing community, particularly in Lagos and Abuja. No federal framework; some states are more tolerant. WAEC exams available for certification.

Healthcare

System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in Nigeria.

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Ibadan

Ibadan is the capital of Oyo State in southwestern Nigeria, roughly 130 kilometers northeast of Lagos, and was historically the largest indigenous Yoruba city. It hosts the University of Ibadan, the country's oldest university, and functions today as a more academically anchored and noticeably calmer counterpart to nearby Lagos. For international relocators it is rarely a primary destination; the foreign community is small and weighted toward academic, NGO, and agricultural-research postings. Yoruba dominates daily life with English used in formal and university settings, the tropical climate brings a defined April-to-October rainy season and consistently warm temperatures, and infrastructure including grid power is unreliable with most middle-class compounds running backup generators.

Tropical climate: hot and humid year-round with rainy season May-OctoberInternet variable but improving: fiber available in central areas, mobile hotspots common for backupGrowing expat community: primarily entrepreneurs, digital nomads, and NGO workersWalkability moderate: traffic-heavy but some central districts pedestrian-friendlyFood scene excellent: street food culture, local Yoruba cuisine, some international optionsNightlife vibrant: active bar and club scene in areas like Bodija and GRACoworking emerging: spaces like The Hive and others catering to remote workersSafety: requires local awareness; avoid certain areas at night, generally secure in expat zones
