Why this quality rating

Nigeria's public-school system is too uneven to treat as a reliable default for internationally mobile families, even though English helps.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident access can exist, but quality, consistency, and practical fit make the public route usually unattractive for expat families.

❓ Homeschooling

Varies by state

Nigeria has compulsory education laws but enforcement is inconsistent. Homeschooling exists in a gray area and is practiced by a growing community, particularly in Lagos and Abuja. No federal framework; some states are more tolerant. WAEC exams available for certification.

Healthcare

System strength, outcome signals, facility coverage, and self-pay visibility in Nigeria.

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Abuja

Abuja is the planned federal capital of Nigeria, built from a 1980s greenfield site and officially replacing Lagos as the capital in 1991. The city's grid-and-zone master plan gives it a markedly different urban character from Lagos: lower density, wider roads, more government and embassy infrastructure, and less of the commercial chaos that defines Lagos. Relocators here are nearly always tied to federal government work, diplomatic missions, NGOs, or oil-sector headquarters offices, rather than commercial trade. Costs in the central planned zones are significantly higher than equivalent space in Lagos. English is the working language. The climate is tropical savanna with a wet season from April through October and a dusty harmattan period in December and January. Security planning is genuinely a daily consideration.
