Why this quality rating

Nigeria's public-school system is too uneven to treat as a reliable default for internationally mobile families, even though English helps.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident access can exist, but quality, consistency, and practical fit make the public route usually unattractive for expat families.

โ“ Homeschooling

Varies by state

Nigeria has compulsory education laws but enforcement is inconsistent. Homeschooling exists in a gray area and is practiced by a growing community, particularly in Lagos and Abuja. No federal framework; some states are more tolerant. WAEC exams available for certification.

Healthcare

Method: country metrics come from public system indicators, facility coverage reflects mapped providers we can inventory, direct pricing only reflects observed self-pay pages, and relative care cost can fall back to broad cost-of-living healthcare indices. Sparse pricing does not imply sparse healthcare availability.

About Port Harcourt

Port Harcourt is the capital of Rivers State and the commercial center of Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta, sitting on the Bonny River and serving as the headquarters for much of the country's hydrocarbons industry. The economy is overwhelmingly shaped by oil and gas, supporting petrochemicals, marine services, and a substantial expatriate engineering presence concentrated in secure compounds in the GRA and along the Bonny axis. English is the working language. For relocators the realistic profile is almost entirely oil-services and related contracting: the broader Niger Delta security environment requires planning around kidnapping and piracy risks, power supply is unreliable, and air quality has been periodically affected by widespread soot incidents linked to artisanal refining in surrounding areas.
