About Kati

Kati is a garrison town in the Koulikoro Region of Mali, sitting just 15 kilometers northwest of the capital Bamako and effectively functioning as part of its commuter belt. Population is about 130,000, dominated by the large military base — Kati is the historic headquarters of the Malian armed forces and the site of multiple coups, most recently in 2020 and 2021. The local economy mixes military employment, market trading for the Bamako region, and small-scale manufacturing. French is the official language with Bambara dominant in daily life. Climate is hot semi-arid Sahel: a hot dry season peaking in April-May with extreme heat, a short rainy season from June to September, and dust-laden Harmattan winds in winter. Foreign relocation is heavily restricted by the post-coup security situation and Western travel advisories warning against all travel.
