About Koutiala
Koutiala is the third-largest city in Mali, sitting in the southern Sikasso Region roughly 380 kilometers southeast of Bamako in the country's cotton-growing belt. The city is widely known within Mali as the cotton capital, anchoring the Compagnie Malienne pour le Développement du Textile operations that dominate cotton processing across southern Mali. The surrounding region produces the bulk of the country's cotton exports, supplemented by sorghum, maize, and livestock. French is the official language with Bambara as the everyday lingua franca alongside Senufo languages spoken in surrounding villages. The climate is tropical savanna with a single wet season from June through October and a long hot dry season the rest of the year. Mali's broader security situation, particularly in northern and central regions, has affected economic activity nationally, though southern regions including Koutiala have been less directly disrupted.
