About Kayes

Kayes lies in far western Mali along the Senegal River, close to the border with Senegal and Mauritania and far from the capital Bamako, which sits roughly 500 kilometers to the east. It is the historic administrative center of the Kayes Region and a key node on the Dakar-Bamako rail corridor, with mining, particularly gold extraction in the surrounding district, dominating the modern economy alongside agriculture and cross-border trade. The climate is one of the hottest consistently inhabited on earth, with pre-monsoon highs regularly above 45Β°C and a short rainy season from June to September. For any foreign resident, Mali's current security environment, restricted travel advisories from most Western governments, and limited consular presence outside Bamako are the overriding practical factors.
