About Ségou

Ségou is the capital of Ségou Region in central Mali, on the right bank of the Niger River about 235 kilometers downstream of Bamako, with roughly 206,000 residents. It is the historic seat of the eighteenth-century Bambara Kingdom of Ségou and remains the country's principal river port between Bamako and Mopti, with an economy built on Office du Niger irrigated rice and sugarcane agriculture, the Markala hydropower and irrigation dam upstream, and small-scale textile and pottery work. French is the official administrative language, with Bambara universal in daily life. The Sahelian climate is hot year-round with a short, intense rainy season from June to September. Road links to Bamako are paved but increasingly affected by deteriorating security across central Mali; the river itself is navigable to Mopti and Timbuktu only during high water from August through December.
