About San
San is a town in the Ségou Region of central Mali, with about 103,227 residents, sitting on a plateau between the Niger and Bani rivers in the country's agricultural heartland. It is a regional commercial centre for the surrounding millet, sorghum, and groundnut farming country, with a historic role in the trans-Saharan trade and a noted Sudano-Sahelian mud-architecture mosque. The population is predominantly Bambara, Bobo, and Marka, with French as the official language and Bambara as the working everyday language. Since the 2012 northern Mali crisis, much of the country has been affected by jihadist insurgency, and the security situation in the Ségou and Mopti regions has deteriorated materially, with foreign residency now limited to specific UN, NGO, and missionary postings under negotiated access. Climate is hot semi-arid with very hot dry summers and a short monsoon rainy season.
