Why this quality rating

Iraq's public-school path is highly situational and not generally the default option for expat families seeking stability and broad support.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident enrollment may be possible, but the local-language environment and uneven system conditions make the public route difficult for most expat families.

Homeschooling

Not specifically addressed

Iraq requires compulsory education but does not have a specific homeschooling framework. The ongoing security situation and limited institutional capacity mean enforcement is inconsistent. Not a practical destination for worldschooling families.

About Karbala

Karbala is one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, home to about 1.22 million residents roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Baghdad on the edge of the Iraqi desert. It contains the shrines of Imam Husayn and Imam Abbas and receives tens of millions of pilgrims annually for the Arba'in commemoration, one of the largest peaceful gatherings on earth. The local economy is overwhelmingly pilgrimage-driven. Climate is hot desert with mild winters. Relocators should weigh that Karbala is not a conventional expat city: residency for non-Muslim foreigners is uncommon and largely restricted to NGO or oil-services contractors based in Baghdad, Arabic is essential, and the practical security and visa environment for Iraq remains demanding.

Hot, arid climate with temperatures exceeding 45°C in summerLimited but improving internet quality - not ideal for remote work reliabilityGrowing but modest expat community, mostly diplomats and NGO workersModerate walkability in city center; traditional neighborhoods are pedestrian-friendlyAuthentic Middle Eastern and Iraqi cuisine; limited international dining optionsVery conservative nightlife scene; alcohol restricted and social venues limitedFew dedicated coworking spaces; most expats work from accommodations or cafesSecurity concerns require vigilance; areas around holy shrines generally safe but curfews apply
