About Palembang, Sumatra
Palembang is the capital of South Sumatra Province in Indonesia, a riverine city of about 1.67 million on the Musi River roughly 80 km upstream from the Bangka Strait. It is one of Southeast Asia's oldest continuously inhabited cities, the historical heart of the Srivijaya maritime empire, and today runs on oil, gas, rubber, and palm oil rather than tourism. For relocators it is largely not an expat destination outside the energy sector, which centers on Pertamina and a handful of multinational operators. Bahasa Indonesia is essential, English is limited, and seasonal haze from agricultural burning in Sumatra and Kalimantan periodically pushes air quality into hazardous ranges, which is the single biggest practical concern.
