About Atsiaman
Atsiaman, also written Ashaiman, is a township in Greater Accra Region in southeastern Ghana, with about 203,000 residents. It sits immediately north of Tema, the country's principal port city, about 25 kilometers east of central Accra, and grew from a small settlement into one of the densest unplanned urban areas in West Africa through migration of port workers, traders, and northern Ghanaians from the 1970s onward. The economy is overwhelmingly informal, with a very large open-air market that supplies much of Greater Accra, plus daily commuter labor into Tema's port, refineries, and industrial estates. English is the official language, with Twi, Ga, Ewe, and Hausa all widely spoken in daily life. The coastal climate is hot and humid year-round with two distinct wet seasons. The Tema-Accra motorway connects the area into central Accra in about an hour under typical traffic.
