About Cabudwaaq

Cabudwaaq is a district town of roughly 120,000 in Galmudug State, central Somalia, situated on a semi-arid plateau near the Ethiopian border. The local economy centers on camel and goat pastoralism, small-scale trade with Ethiopia, and remittances from the Somali diaspora. The town is largely Marehan clan territory and falls under Galmudug administration, with limited federal reach. Climate is hot and dry year-round with two short rainy seasons that govern grazing cycles. There is no functioning international airport nearby; access typically requires charter flights via Galkayo. Relocation is effectively limited to Somali returnees and humanitarian or development staff working under strict security protocols, given persistent Al-Shabaab activity in surrounding districts.
