About Marka

Marka is a port city on the Indian Ocean coast of Somalia, located in Lower Shabelle region roughly 90 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu. The city was historically one of the most important trading ports of the Benadir coast and the surrounding region remains the agricultural heartland of southern Somalia, producing bananas, sugar, and citrus along the Shabelle River. Decades of conflict, periodic occupation by armed groups, and limited central government control have severely constrained the local economy. The climate is hot semi-arid year-round, moderated by sea breezes and shaped by two rainy seasons. Somali is the working language, with Arabic widely used. International access is via Mogadishu under tight security; practical relocation is almost exclusively NGO, diplomatic, or African Union mission work.
