About Borama

Borama is the capital of the Awdal region in northwestern Somaliland, the self-declared and de facto independent territory within Somalia, with roughly 598,000 residents in a small inland valley near the Ethiopian border. The local economy centers on cross-border trade with Ethiopia, agriculture on the surrounding hills, livestock, remittances from a sizable diaspora, and Amoud University, one of the oldest higher-education institutions in the region. The climate is hot semi-arid moderated by elevation around 1,400 meters, giving cooler temperatures than Mogadishu or Hargeisa. Somali is the working language, with Arabic and limited English in academic and government settings. Relocators face significant constraints: Somaliland's contested international recognition complicates banking, visas, and insurance; international flights route through Hargeisa or Addis Ababa; and Western expat infrastructure beyond aid and academic circles is minimal.
