About Baidoa

Baidoa sits in the Bay region of south-central Somalia, roughly 250 kilometers northwest of Mogadishu and historically the agricultural heartland of the Rahanweyn clan. Population is about 130,000, swollen significantly by recurring waves of displacement from drought and conflict โ€” the city hosts one of the largest IDP populations in the country and has been the epicenter of multiple famines including the 1992 and 2011 crises. African Union and Somali federal forces hold the city while Al-Shabaab controls much of the surrounding territory, making overland travel hazardous. Climate is hot semi-arid with extreme summer heat and erratic rains that have grown more unreliable under climate stress. Somali is the working language. Foreign relocation is effectively impossible outside heavily fortified UN and humanitarian compounds; Western governments advise against all travel to Somalia.
