About Toamasina

Toamasina, also known as Tamatave, is the principal port city of Madagascar, on the Indian Ocean coast on the country's east side. It is a regional rather than national capital and serves as Madagascar's largest port, handling the bulk of the country's container and bulk-cargo trade, supplemented by oil refining at the Galana refinery, fishing, and agricultural exports including cloves, vanilla, and lychees. Malagasy is the national language with French widely used in business and government. The climate is tropical rainforest, hot and humid year-round with very high rainfall and exposure to Indian Ocean cyclones during the southern summer. Relocation drivers are concentrated in port logistics, energy, and humanitarian or development work; the Antananarivo–Toamasina railway and the RN2 highway are the principal links to the capital.
