Why this quality rating

Indonesia's public system is not the route most expat families choose when they have alternatives.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident access may be possible, but Indonesian-medium instruction and uneven quality make the public path a hard sell for foreign families.

Legal (recognized alternative)

Homeschooling is recognized under the Indonesian National Education System. Must register with the local education office. Students can take national exams (Paket A/B/C equivalency exams) to receive official certificates. Growing community in Bali and Jakarta.

About Batu, Java

Batu is a small city in East Java, Indonesia, sitting at roughly 800 meters elevation in the highlands immediately west of Malang and 90 kilometers south of Surabaya. The cooler upland climate has made Batu a long-established weekend getaway for residents of the East Java lowlands, with the local economy combining apple and dairy farming on the volcanic slopes, domestic tourism centered on theme parks and hot springs, and a growing number of guesthouses and villas. Indonesian is universal with Javanese widely spoken. The climate is tropical highland with average temperatures roughly five degrees cooler than Surabaya, frequent fog, and a pronounced rainy season from November through April. Surabaya's Juanda International Airport, roughly two hours away by road, provides the primary international air connection for relocators considering an upland East Java base.
