Why this quality rating

Indonesia's public system is not the route most expat families choose when they have alternatives.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident access may be possible, but Indonesian-medium instruction and uneven quality make the public path a hard sell for foreign families.

📋 Homeschooling

Legal (recognized alternative)

Homeschooling is recognized under the Indonesian National Education System. Must register with the local education office. Students can take national exams (Paket A/B/C equivalency exams) to receive official certificates. Growing community in Bali and Jakarta.

About Ambon, Maluku

Ambon is the capital of Maluku Province in eastern Indonesia, on Ambon Island in the Banda Sea rather than a national capital. It is the principal city of the Maluku archipelago — the historical Spice Islands — with an economy built on government administration, fishing and pearl farming, clove and nutmeg agriculture in the surrounding islands, and Pattimura University. Indonesian is universal, with Ambonese Malay as the dominant local creole. The religious demographic is unusually balanced, with substantial Christian and Muslim populations; the city saw severe sectarian conflict from 1999 to 2002 and has since stabilized. The climate is hot tropical with a distinct wet season from May to September driven by the eastern monsoon pattern and exposure to seismic activity. Relocation drivers are largely sector-driven through government, fisheries, and university.
