About Tigwav

Tigwav, the Haitian Creole rendering of Petit-Goave, is a coastal town in Haiti's Ouest department on the northern shore of the Tiburon Peninsula, about 70 kilometres southwest of Port-au-Prince along Route Nationale 2. It is historically significant as one of the oldest French-founded settlements on Hispaniola and was heavily damaged by the 2010 and 2021 earthquakes, both of which had nearby epicentres. The local economy revolves around fishing, the Marche Valliere, and small-scale agriculture producing the dous makos candy for which the town is nationally known. Haitian Creole is universal and French is administrative. Infrastructure remains fragile after repeated disasters, with intermittent power and limited healthcare. The tropical maritime climate is warm year-round with a hurricane risk from June to November.
