About Jacmel

Jacmel is a port town on the southern coast of Haiti, in the Sud-Est department on the Caribbean about eighty kilometers south of Port-au-Prince across the southern peninsula. It is known within Haiti for its nineteenth-century coffee-trader iron architecture, an established handicrafts and papier-mâché tradition tied to the annual Carnival, and a notable film festival, alongside a fishing and agricultural hinterland. Jacmel was heavily damaged in the 2010 earthquake and has more recently been affected by the broader insecurity that has gripped Haiti since 2021, with road links to Port-au-Prince repeatedly disrupted by gang control of routes out of the capital. For foreigners, presence is limited and largely humanitarian. Climate is tropical with a Caribbean rainfall pattern peaked from April through November.
