About Jijiga

Jijiga is the capital of Ethiopia's Somali Region, sitting on a high plateau in the eastern lowlands near the border with Somaliland and roughly 80 kilometers from the Hargeisa frontier. The city functions as the administrative and trade hub for the surrounding pastoralist economy, with cross-border commerce to the Berbera corridor driving much of the private sector. Somali is the dominant working language alongside Amharic; English use is concentrated in NGOs, the regional university and federal offices. Relocators should weigh a semi-arid climate with mild temperatures thanks to the 1,600-meter elevation, a fragile security context shaped by past Ogaden conflict and ongoing regional tensions, and infrastructure that is bare Tier 3: a small airport, intermittent power and limited international banking access.
