About Hawassa

Hawassa is the same Rift Valley city referred to in older sources as Awasa, the capital of the Sidama Region in Ethiopia, on the western shore of Lake Hawassa at around 1,700 meters elevation. With around 422,000 residents, it serves as the regional administrative center and an important national node for export manufacturing through the Hawassa Industrial Park, which produces apparel for global brands. Relocators should weigh a mild highland climate that stays comfortably warm year-round, direct road access to Addis Ababa via the expressway that has cut travel times to roughly four hours, and a planned urban layout with the lake as a recreational anchor, against limited international flight access outside Addis, ongoing security considerations across parts of Ethiopia, and modest healthcare infrastructure for serious cases.
