About Riobamba
Riobamba sits in the Ecuadorian Andes at roughly 2,750 meters elevation, in Chimborazo Province along the Pan-American Highway between Quito and Cuenca. The city is dominated by the snowcapped Chimborazo volcano, which at 6,263 meters has the point on Earth's surface farthest from the planet's center due to the equatorial bulge. The local economy mixes textiles, leather and footwear, agricultural processing for the surrounding Sierra farmland, and a notable role as the trailhead for Andean tourism and the historic Devil's Nose section of the Ecuadorian railway. Spanish is universal with Kichwa widely spoken in surrounding indigenous communities. The high-altitude equatorial climate gives cool temperatures year-round with cold nights, strong solar radiation, and a clear wet season. Direct road connections reach Quito in about three hours and Cuenca in five.
