Why this quality rating

Ecuador has below-average PISA outcomes with significant urban-rural quality gaps. The public system is Spanish-medium. Major improvements have been attempted but outcomes remain weak.

Why the expat-access rating looks like this

Resident expat families can technically use public schools. In practice, quality concerns and Spanish-medium instruction push most expat families in Quito and Cuenca toward private or bilingual schools.

πŸ“‹ Homeschooling

Legal with registration

Ecuador recognizes homeschooling under its "educaciΓ³n en casa" framework. Families must register with the Ministry of Education and follow a structured program. Assessments are required.

About Machala

Machala is the capital of El Oro Province in southwestern Ecuador, a low-lying coastal city on the Gulf of Guayaquil about 70 kilometers north of the Peruvian border. The local economy runs on banana exports through Puerto Bolivar, shrimp farming along the mangrove estuaries, and cacao processing, earning it the title of Ecuador's banana capital. The climate is hot and humid year-round with a pronounced wet season from January to April. For relocation, Machala offers dollarized prices well below Quito or Guayaquil, flat walkable streets, a regional airport with Quito connections, and a working-port economy that absent Galapagos tourism keeps day-to-day costs anchored to agriculture and shipping.
