About Esmeraldas

Esmeraldas is the capital of Esmeraldas Province in northwestern Ecuador, sitting on the Pacific coast near the mouth of the Esmeraldas River roughly 320 kilometers northwest of Quito. The city is the country's principal oil export terminal, with the trans-Andean SOTE pipeline carrying Amazonian crude across the country to the refinery and port complex here. The local population is predominantly Afro-Ecuadorian, a notable demographic concentration in a country where this community is otherwise a national minority. Spanish is universal. The climate is tropical with consistent warmth year-round and a long rainy season from December through May. Proximity to the Colombian border roughly 90 kilometers north has brought spillover effects from the broader Colombian conflict including narcotics-related violence, which has worsened security conditions in recent years and is a meaningful consideration for any relocator.
